Parks in Mind Our Community Hero in the Spotlight for January is Parks in Mind – an ecotherapy programme meant to help the local green spaces and improve the mental health and wellbeing of those taking part. ‘Parks in Mind’ was launched in August 2018 by The Parks Foundation. It is a project co-developed with Public Health Dorset, Bournemouth Borough Council and residents and it is focused on improving the lives of people in BCP area. It offers a large range of free-to-attend park-based activities which aim to reduce social isolation, improve mental and physical health, and help to create better parks for local communities. The Park Foundation members closely work with attendees to co-create the sessions around people’s week and encourage positive conversations about mental health. Anyone is welcome to join ‘Parks in Mind’ and activities include wildlife walks, bulb planting and litter picking, yoga, as well as star gazing, nature-based crafts, astronomy sessions, gentle exercise, and guided meditation. Those who benefited from the therapeutic power of being outdoors, have also gained new friendships and skills, built up confidence and improved their physical and mental health. ‘Parks in Mind’ offer online and live-streamed activities due to Covid-19 restrictions for people who are unable to leave their home.
