Representing our sector

The local voluntary sector makes an amazing difference to the local community, and we believe it deserves a bigger voice. We provide a network for connecting organisations working within the sector and engage with other organisations such as the NHS and BCP Council on behalf of the sector.

We CAN involve communities by:

  • Leading the sector and maintain knowledge of all voluntary and community sector (VCS) and activities across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole so they are more knowledgeable about community needs
  • providing networking opportunities, enable sharing good practice and partnership working across the voluntary, public and private sector so people feel engaged and included
  • putting mechanisms in place that facilitate an ongoing conversation with ‘Our Dorset’ and other public and private sector organisations, which influences services to meet community needs and improve outcomes
  • providing robust and accountable representation of our sector to enable ongoing involvement of communities and ensure ‘Our Dorset’ and other public and private sector organisations are informed by the community about emerging needs and priorities
  • negotiating agreements/protocols/compacts, which support collaborative and respectful working.

Membership

Our members are at the heart of everything we do. Membership is completely free and gives organisations the opportunity to:

  • access our expert support, professional advice and practical services
  • benefit from our volunteering hub
  • know their insight is shaping local services
  • feel connected to the local VCS
  • help smaller VCS organisations thrive

We are working with our partners to develop a new model of working through 2020 (post Coronavirus restrictions) – the proposals are:

CAN Partnership Forums

Supporting a two-way conversation between the voluntary, public and private sector. We’ll be continuing our successful Health and Wellbeing forums with ‘Our Dorset’ – plus introducing five new forums based on the new key objectives of BCP Council, which are:

  • Sustainable Environment
  • Dynamic Places
  • Connected Communities
  • Brighter Futures
  • Fulfilled Lives

VCS Leaders Exchange

We’ll be developing an opportunity for leaders from across the voluntary and community sector in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole to get together and:

  • share a strategic overview of the local sector
  • discuss outcomes of Forums
  • offer peer support
  • brief CAN on current ‘hot topics’
  • develop more collaborative working where possible

Voluntary Sector Representation

We’re developing the role of CAN in representing the sector and working with key partners to influence service development – currently on the following ‘boards’ – more to follow:

  • Health and Wellbeing Board
  • East Integrated Health and Care Partnership
  • Integrated Community and Primary Care Services Board
  • BCP Safeguarding Adults Board
  • Bournemouth Homelessness Strategy Group
