We all want to live “A Good Life”, but many older people struggle to overcome the challenges of loneliness and social isolation. Our aim at Community Action Network is to bring community groups, businesses and volunteers together initially in Canford Cliffs, Newtown and Alderney, Poole to help tackle loneliness in later life.
The Lottery funded “A Good Life” project is a partnership that comprises a range of public and voluntary sector agencies including Community Action Network, BCP Council, Public Health Dorset, Bournemouth University, Faithworks and Prama. It is the ambition of the project to increase awareness of loneliness and social isolation as an issue to the greater community; equip community groups and businesses to identify and engage with older lonely people and ultimately develop their own solutions to local need. It is our aim that older people have increased knowledge of and participation in community services and activities, and thus individuals are less lonely and experience improved health and wellbeing.
For some individuals, taking those first steps into connecting with their community can be difficult. Our volunteer “Community Connectors” will work on a one-to-one basis to help older people experiencing loneliness or social isolation enjoy community activities (through accompanying them at first, then helping to develop their confidence to continue independently). Volunteers will be recruited, inducted and appropriately trained to support older people to identify what they would like to do and empower them to do it.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus situation, we are currently working with community groups, charities and statutory bodies to look at different ways to support older lonely people during this difficult time. However, we would still like to hear from you if you are interested in volunteering to contribute to this exciting programme in the future.
Please visit the Volunteering page where you can find task descriptions and an application form.

We’re looking for volunteers to bring this project to life through a variety of interesting and rewarding roles.
For many older people, A Good Life is reliant on a welcoming, understanding, supportive local community.
If you or someone you know has been feeling lonely for a while, a first step is to notice and identify this, even just to yourself.
